Caveman-style grilling is an ancient cooking method where food is prepared directly on hot coals, without using modern cooking tools such as grill grates or pans. The aim is to create a crispy crust while keeping it medium-rare inside, and all this gives a unique flavour to your dish. Below is the process and supplies for caveman-style grilling.
Supplies:
- Glowing charcoal: start by lighting your barbecue. Let the coals burn until they glow with intense heat. You don't want to see flames, just hot, glowing coals.
- Thin slices of food: select the food you want to cook. Thin slices of meat work best for caveman-style grilling. Popular choices are steaks, lamb chops, salmon fillets, vegetables like courgette and aubergine, or even slices of pineapple.
- Salt and pepper: season the thin slices of food with freshly ground black pepper and coarse sea salt. This adds to the flavour and to the crispy crust.
